December 1, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – After an unprecedented fundraising event at Michael Jordan Nissan in Durham, partner Ray Vrscak recently presented a check for $2400 to Pretty In Pink Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides financial resources for under-insured and uninsured North Carolinians with breast cancer.
For the first time in its history, the dealership decided to make breast cancer awareness and the search for a cure a part of its community outreach. After a search of breast cancer-related organizations, the partners selected Pretty In Pink Foundation as the recipient of a special four-day sale in October dubbed “Ridin’ for a Cure.” For every car sold during the sale, $100 was earmarked for Pretty In Pink Foundation.
Michael Jordan Nissan promoted the sale with extensive advertising campaign and a video that the dealership posted on its website (www.michaeljordannissan.com) and Facebook fan page. After the event, Vrscak presented the check personally to Pretty In Pink Foundation’s executive director, Penny Lauricella.

Area Retailers Want You To “Think Pink” For A Day

November 13, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – A grassroots effort in support of Pretty In Pink Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides financial resources for under-insured and uninsured North Carolinians with breast cancer, continues to grow among Triangle area retailers.
Among the many retailers supporting the foundation is Generations Salon & Day Spa in Raleigh. The salon/spa will hold a “Gold Buying Party” on November 13th with a percentage of the proceeds going to Pretty In Pink Foundation.
For the Party, gold buyer Michelle Pilos will set up shop in Generations Salon & Day Spa in to purchase broken or unwanted gold and silver items from the public. She will then donate 20 percent of the proceeds to Pretty In Pink Foundation.
Pretty In Pink Foundation board member Renee Jankowsky, owner of Generations Salon & Day Spa, is also donating 20 percent of the price of many of its services that day, from ear-piercings and massages to hair conditioning and sales of its Caribbean products.
The salon will also give away tee shirts, samples, coupons, and $10 “Generations Bucks” for use on services and products. Refreshments will be served.
“When area retailers rally to support a cause, the impact is immediate. The efforts of those who champion for Pretty In Pink Foundation’s mission know that we are helping our neighbors, our friends and our loved ones conquer breast cancer. Hat’s off to Michelle Pilos and Renee Jankowsky for being community heroes.” Commented Olalah Njenga, Pretty In Pink Foundation’s marketing strategist and CEO of YellowWood Group.
Njenga also notes that unlike other breast cancer organizations that raise funds for research, Pretty In Pink Foundation’s sole mission is to help with the costs related to care and surgery once a breast cancer diagnosis has been confirmed and there are financial hardships present.
The gold-buying portion of the day will be held from 10 a.m. until 12 noon, and from 4-6 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

Durham car dealership hosts 3-day fundraising event to raise money for continued outreach.
October 27, 2009 (DURHAM, NC) – Pretty In Pink Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides financial resources for under-insured and uninsured North Carolinians with breast cancer, has teamed up with Michael Jordan Nissan in Durham to celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness month. The three day sales event will raise money and bring attention to a health care need in Triangle area communities.
From October 29th through the 31st, Michael Jordan Nissan will donate $100 to Pretty In Pink Foundation for every vehicle sold during the three day event, which has been named “Ridin’ for a Cure.”
“Our dealership has a long standing commitment to supporting our local community,” said Ray Vrscak, Michael Jordan Nissan’s partner. “We’re excited and honored to support the Pretty in Pink Foundation and their efforts to eliminate financial barriers to those affected with breast cancer in the state of North Carolina.”
Michael Jordan Nissan has provided a resource table for Pretty In Pink Foundation filled with information about ways to volunteer and donate.

October 5, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – Pretty In Pink Foundation’s inaugural “Hike for Hope,” held in Cary, NC, last month, raised nearly $12,000 when final pledges were tallied on September 30th. Hike day began with the threat of rain, but the skies cleared by mid-morning and 268 participants showed up to show their support for Pretty In Pink Foundation.
The Hike for Hope was a family-oriented, non-competitive event in which participants hiked along a variety of trails at Cary’s Fred Bond Park to raise money to help Pretty In Pink Foundation continue its mission of providing financial assistance to uninsured and underinsured breast cancer patients in North Carolina. The day included a variety of vendors, refreshments, and entertainment. Pretty In Pink’s founder and chairperson, Dr. Lisa Tolnitch, was among the hikers along the two-mile trail.
“We are thrilled at the overwhelming community support and equally thrilled about exceeding our fundraising goal,” said Penny Lauricella, the non-profit foundation’s executive director. “Pretty In Pink Foundation is committed to stretching every dollar and making it go as far as it can to help the underinsured and uninsured as much as possible. Several participants shared their personal stories of breast cancer survivorship; some even wore survivor tee-shirts during the hike. We were all encouraged by the overwhelming enthusiasm”

Raleigh Hair Salon Joins The Cause During PinkFest 2009

September 30, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – To show support for the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Foundation and to help kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lather Hair Salon in Raleigh will participate in “PinkFest 2009,” an afternoon of celebration, information, and personal pampering to be held Sunday, October 4, from 1-4 p.m. at the new Renaissance Raleigh Hotel in North Hills.
Owner Jessica Williams and other Lather stylists will be on hand to demonstrate hair and makeup techniques to the 300-plus attendees expected. 
“We’re really looking forward to sharing our expertise with everyone who comes to PinkFest, but especially the breast cancer survivors who will be there,” Williams said. “If anyone deserves a day of pampering, it’s those courageous ladies. And we’ll have all sorts of great information to share with them and demonstrate for them concerning hair care and styling and make-up application.”
Proceeds from PinkFest 2009 will be used for education, treatment and screening programs in the Triangle community.
Organized by Komen NC Triangle, the sold-out event will include a survivor recognition ceremony and door prizes along with vendors’ booths.

Fundraising Fashion Show To Celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

September 18, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – Pretty In Pink Foundation and the Women Business Owners Network (WBON) will host “Honoring You,” a Fashion Show and Luncheon, on Wednesday, October 7th, to celebrate National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to raise funds for the Pretty In Pink Foundation. The show and luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m., at the Matthews House, 317 W. Chatham Street, Cary.
The Fashion Show will include 10 winter styles from Doncaster in Chapel Hill, modeled by WBON members and Pretty In Pink Foundation volunteers. Fashion authority Mary Michele Little of OneChicMama.com will emcee the show.
Pretty In Pink Foundation is the only not-for-profit organization in North Carolina that provides financial resources for uninsured and underinsured breast cancer patients with limited financial means, including the lack of health insurance. In a message to its membership, WBON noted the reasons why funds raised from the Fashion Show and Luncheon are so important:
- One in 10 women is diagnosed with breast cancer each year and almost 20 percent of women in North Carolina are without health insurance.
- Life-saving breast cancer treatment bills can total in the $100,000s.
- Pretty in Pink Foundation, headquartered in Raleigh, provides access to quality of life support, education and life-saving resources to North Carolinians diagnosed with breast cancer, regardless of their ability to pay.
Those who attend the event can get involved in various ways besides the cost of a ticket, WBON notes. They can honor someone by sponsoring a Pink Balloon Display or Pink Flower Bouquet for the Show. (Both are $25 and can be purchased at www.wbon-cary.org.) They can also purchase raffle tickets for $5 to win a “50/50 Drawing” in which 50 percent of the money raised through the raffle goes to Pretty In Pink. (Last year’s winner took home $2500.)
The cost for the luncheon is $20 for members and $30 for non-members who pre-register before Monday, October 5th at 12 noon. Registration at the door is welcomed for $40.

Morning event will raise funds for breast cancer patients 
September 4, 2009 (CARY, NC) – Pretty In Pink Foundation in Raleigh, NC, will host its first “Hike For Hope,” a family-oriented, non-competitive event to raise funds to provide treatment for uninsured and underinsured breast cancer patients in North Carolina, on Saturday, September 19, in the Fred G. Bond Metro Park, 801 High House Road, Cary, NC.
The last day for online registration at www.prettyinpinkfoundation.org is September 6th. On-site registration will be available on the day of the event.
“We’re hoping folks will bring their friends, families and co-workers to hike with us and help us raise $25,000,” said Raleigh surgeon Dr. Lisa Tolnitch who founded the Pretty In Pink Foundation five years ago to help North Carolinians diagnosed with breast cancer get the treatment and support they need even if they are uninsured or underinsured.
The Hike for Hope will begin at 7:30 a.m. with registration and tee-shirt pick-ups. At 8 p.m., survivors of breast cancer – including Pretty In Pink Foundation’s “Pink Champions” who have been directly served by the Foundation’s services – will take part in a “Survivor Photo Op” at the Bond Park Amphitheater.
Participating vendors and exhibitors will be on hand in the park’s Picnic Shelter from 8-8:30, offering a variety of while aerobic warm-ups will take place at 8:15.
Hikers will choose among three trails: the Lake Trail, a two-mile walk that starts tat 8:30 a.m.; the Loop Trail, a 1.5-mile walk that starts at 9 a.m.; and the Nature Trail, a one-mile walk that starts at 9:30 a.m.
After the Hike, live entertainment and an award ceremony will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at the amphitheater.

July 21, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – When the need is great, the requests increase and so does the media coverage. Dr. Lisa Tolnitch, a Raleigh, NC breast cancer surgeon has been tapped by several media outlets to share the mission of Pretty In Pink Foundation, a non-profit organization she founded nearly five years ago. 
Pretty In Pink Foundation, a 501(c)(3) headquartered in Raleigh, NC, provides financial assistance and quality of life resources for North Carolina residents who are underinsured or uninsured and have been diagnosed with breast cancer.
NBC’s TODAY Show correspondent Anne Thompson came to Raleigh recently to interview Dr. Tonitch and Capital Bank CEO Grant Yarber. An on-going supporter, Capital Bank awarded Pretty In Pink Foundation its first “Pink Promise” Corporate Donation of 2009. Pink Promise contribution guarantees the bank’s financial support for a minimum of three years. NBC has rescheduled airing the segment from July 20, as originally planned, to Wednesday, July 23rd, at 8:30 a.m.
On July 20th, Dr. Tonitch and Capital Bank’s Yarber were guests on Scott Fitzgerald’s “North Carolina Morning News” on WPTF-AM and on July 21st, Penny Lauricella, executive director of Pretty In Pink Foundation, spoke with WRAL-TV’s Pam Saulsby during the noon news broadcast to discuss the foundation’s mission.
Unlike other breast-cancer related organizations, Pretty In Pink Foundation does not focus on funding for research. Dr. Tolnitch takes tremendous pride in devoting more than 90 percent of the foundation’s donations to the cost of breast cancer treatment and/or surgery.

May 14, 2009 (Raleigh, NC) — Founded in 2004 by breast cancer surgeon, Dr. Lisa Tolnitch, Pretty In Pink Foundation, headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a privately owned, not for profit organization. To date, Pretty In Pink Foundation has helped 19 women in North Carolina beat the odds of breast cancer and become breast cancer champions. On Monday, May 18, 2009, Pretty In Pink Foundation will celebrate the lives of the women it has helped, as well as the vision to have a point of presence in every state by 2020.
In a standing ceremony from noon to 1 p.m. in The Gardens at Rex Hospital at 4420 Lake Boone Trail, Raleigh, NC, Pretty In Pink Foundation will kick off the anniversary event entitled “Celebrating 5 Years Of Hope” by planting a tree in the courtyard and cutting the symbolic pink ribbon.
