September 23, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – When Lather Hair Salon introduced “Latherwear” this summer, the Raleigh salon’s logo tee-shirts sold out as regular and new clients welcomed the discount that came with purchasing one of the all-cotton tees.
That promotion officially ended, like summer, on Labor Day. Now Lather Hair Salon has rolled out its new fall and winter Latherwear: soft brown hooded sweatshirts emblazoned with Lather’s light-blue logo. And with each purchase ($39.95), clients receive 20 percent off all the services they receive that day. If their services total $200, the “hoodie” is free.
“The logo tees were so popular this summer that we wanted to keep it going,” said Lather’s owner and senior stylist Jessica Williams. “We love the idea of folks wearing our ‘Latherwear’ out there, and we know they appreciate a discount in this difficult economy.”

Lather stylists Becky, Whitney and Lauren in their "Latherwear" hoodies.
The “Latherwear” logo hoodies are the newest special offering at Lather Hair Salon. The salon’s website continues to offer a 20-perent-off coupon for first-time clients only as well as other daily specials, such as “hair makeover Mondays” and “hump day highlights.”
Latherwear hoodies are only available in the salon, which is located at 8521 Cantilever Way, Suite 109, just off North Glenwood Avenue/Highway 70 West near Carmax. For more information, including business hours, visit www.latherhairsalonnc.com.

Local Advocate Hopes Good News for Housing Market Means Good News for Modernist Houses
August 25, 2009 at 8:31 pm | In architecture, business, historic preservation, mid-century architecture, modern architecture, news | Leave a CommentTags: modernist houses NC, NC real estate, Triangle housing, Triangle real estate
August 25, 2009 (DURHAM, NC) — After the Associated Press reported last week that “the U.S. housing market is rebounding faster than expected” (News & Observer), George Smart of Durham, NC, the founder and director of Triangle Modernist Archives Inc, (TMA) is hoping some of that momentum will help preserve some of the modern houses currently on the market in the Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill region of North Carolina.
Smart is the founder and director of Triangle Modernist Archives, Inc., a non-profit entity that archives and advocates modernist residential design. It’s website, www.trianglemodernisthouses.com, includes a free “For Sale” section that spotlights modernist houses on the market solely for the purpose of helping them find new owners. TMA does not receive a percentage of the sale.
At present, the list includes 45 residences, from a 1949 house in Chapel Hill designed by Jim Webb to Dwell Magazine’s “Next House” in Hillsborough, designed by Joel Turkel and completed in 2007.
“Any Triangle modernist homeowner or real estate agent can participate,” Smart explained. “All they have to do is send an email with the house address, city, owner’s name, year built, square feet, and architect, if known; photos of the front, back, kitchen, and living room; and a link to where readers can get more information. Typically this is a real estate company website or MLS. Submissions, if approved, are generally reviewed, edited, and posted within 48 hours.”
(MLS, or the Multiple Listing Service, is a real estate service that combines listings for all available properties in an area, except For-Sale-By-Owner properties, in one directory or database.)
TriangleModernistHouses.com has helped many homeowners and realtors sell new and mid-century modern residences in the Triangle area and, in some cases, as far away as Charlotte to the west and Rocky Mount to the east, thanks to a growing data base of modernist enthusiasts who sign up for Smart’s email updates or visit the site frequently.
“Our historical content and detail is unrivaled,” Smart said, “which is why devoted modernist-oriented visitors return again and again.”
According to Raleigh realtor Ann-Cabell Baum Anderson, the website listing and tour sponsored of the dramatically modern, 3900-square-foot home overlooking Lake Boone Trail in Raleigh helped her sell that property. The house was designed by Jessica Johnson Moore.

TMH.com helped drive interest in the Johnson House overlooking Lake Boone Trial in Raleigh.
“From a realtor’s standpoint, TMH absolutely drives more eyes toward, and more conversation around, the modernist houses we list,” she said. “It is extremely helpful, and George and his board are just dynamic people. I applaud them for their advocacy and thank them for their efforts.”
Smart noted that he frequently receives calls from modern home enthusiasts as far away as California and Maine who have found his website online and seek out his help in matching them with an existing home or connecting them with a local architect who can design one for them. The website also maintains information on modern architects working in the Triangle today as well as an archive of past modernists who contributed to the area’s built environment.
A Raleigh native and the son of an architect, George Smart loves to point out a little known fact: that the Triangle area “is the third largest concentration of modernist houses in America. We have more than anywhere except LA and Chicago,” he said.
He’s hoping the part of that concentration that’s currently for sale will find enthusiastic new owners as buyers return to the housing market.
For more information on Triangle Modernist Houses and to view the list of homes for sale, go to www.trianglemodernisthouses.com and click on “For Sale.”
About Triangle Modernist Houses:

TMA is committed to restoring and growing modernist architecture in the Triangle. TMH also hosts popular modernist house tours several times a year, giving the public access to the Triangle’s most exciting residential architecture, past and present. These tours raise awareness and help preserve these works of art for future generations. Visit the website at www.trianglemodernisthouses.com.
Lather Hair Salon Offers Deep Discounts To Facebook Fans
August 24, 2009 at 6:25 pm | In beauty, business, fashion, hair care, hair styling | Leave a CommentTags: Facebook fan pages, hair discounts, hair salons Raleigh, Raleigh hair salons
August 24, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – There are all sorts of reasons why people join Facebook, arguably the most popular “social media” source out there: to keep up with current friends and locate old ones; to make business contacts and open doors; to “network” from your desk and raise your visibility; to develop a personal brand, target a niche, get access to no-cost marketing; and so on.
Now there’s another reason: To get deep discounts on hair care services.
Lather Hair Salon, a new full-service salon in North Raleigh, offers special same-day deals to its Facebook friends and fans. They can be scrolling through the day’s (or hour’s) postings and suddenly come upon:
“Becky, Lauren, and Whitney have open appointments today. Call and receive 50% off!!” Or: “Haircuts are 30% off today! Rebecca, Whitney, and Lauren have time from 2-4.”
Jessica Williams, owner and senior stylist at Lather Hair Salon, explained that the idea to use Facebook like this just came to her one day when one of her team of stylists had a cancellation. She told her salon manager to post the opening on Facebook, with a discount, and see what happened.
“Within minutes, we had a call,” she said.
Now the Raleigh hair salon makes it a daily habit to post any openings and offer a discount as an incentive to fill them.
Williams said she originally launched Lather’s Facebook page for the usual good-business reasons. “Facebook increases awareness of the salon and helps us stay connected with the local community. We build friendships through the page and maintain customer loyalty. If we have a special coming up or a great how-to tip to offer, we make sure they’re noted on Facebook, often with a link to our website. It’s just a friendly thing to do and another way to be ‘out there’ while we’re working in the salon.”
To get access to these same-day savings, Facebook users must become “fans” of Lather Hair Salon and mention that they saw the special online.
At a time when everyone is pinching pennies, these deep discounts are a win-win proposition – for the customer and the salon.

Setzer Design Group, Winter Custom Yachts Unveil “Express-60″ Collaboration
August 10, 2009 at 9:36 pm | In business, leisure activity, luxury living, news, yacht design, yachting industry | Leave a CommentTags: boat builders NC, business news NC, custom boats, custom yachts, yacht design
August 10, 2009 (CARY, NC) – Setzer Design Group in Cary, NC, known world-wide for its award-winning designs of super-yachts, had been developing the “Express-60” project over the past several months for a client in Florida. Meanwhile in Apex, NC, a small town nearby, Winter Custom Yachts had started building a 60’ hull. Yacht architect Ward Setzer discovered what owner Tim Winters was doing shortly after his Florida client backed out of the project. So the two firms decided to combine their efforts and Setzer is now integrating his design to fit Winter’s custom 60’ hull.

The Express-60
According to Setzer, Tim Winters loved the concept and has “jumped in with both feet” to help meld his own project with Setzer’s. Now, as the two firms look at the common traits of their respective hull lines, Setzer is amazed that they could be worlds apart considering the types of projects they create, yet just down the road from one another, thinking and drawing along the same lines.
“Our studio designs in great detail some of the most complex yachts in the world,” Setzer said, “yet I pride myself on having built numerous smaller boats, and I love the time I spend on shop floors. Tim is a roll-up-his-sleeves-and-get-in-there kind of boat builder, so this is just about perfect — not just for me, but also for buyers. They will get the technology and craftsmanship that will arise from our team approach. I’m sure Tim will keep my team grounded in the realities of the job he must get done, while we will be exposing him to new ideas and technology from our various projects, from 20’ to 200’, in all corners of the globe.”
The new Setzer/Winter vessel is as unique as it is practical. Its “Vista Cabin,” as Setzer calls it, features windows all around the lower salon and galley that afford constant views of the sea. Driven by triple Zeus Pod drives and powered by three of Cummins QSM 715’ HP diesel engines, the vessel is expected to have great speeds out of the hole and great handling, even at a cruising speed of 30+ kts. A 20 KW generator will accompany the primary drive units within their unusual standing-head-room engine space.
The new vessel also features an open helm zone amidship, including sleek instrument panels on center and riding seats port and starboard. There is ample wrap-around seating just aft of the helm, port, and starboard with high-low dining tables and rod storage below. There is also an aft mezzanine deck with aft-facing seating that includes tackle storage. Integrated boxes within the raised mezzanine hold freezers, refrigerator, sink, grill, tackle and other lockers. Along with ample fish boxes, fitted flush within the generous cockpit, is a large bait tank within the transom.
Half a flight of steps down from the helm deck is the salon with the galley to starboard. The galley includes a food-preparation island and a full complement of appliances under sleek stone tops and encased in modern cabinetry. To port is the lounge and TV viewing area with built in storage and library. The wrap-around windows illuminate the “Vista Cabin” with natural light, bringing an open, spacious ambience to the interior. Forward is a laundry room and pantry as well as a bow bunk cabin and head that can be offered as one or two cabins. Aft is a full-beam master suite under the helm deck with a queen-sized bed, built-in dressers, hanging locke, and large head.
The overall styling is typical of Setzer’s work: A bit of the past is referenced in key lines, such as the sheer and bow, along with hints of retro vessels and modern nuances for the deck house and windscreen. The Winter hull was almost a perfect match to the Setzer hull, the designer noted, but with a more “Carolina” flavor and the trademark Winter transom.
“The two will mesh quite well,” Setzer said. “And based on the performance of Tim’s recently launched 62’ ‘Galot3’ the design should be both a tournament angler’s favorite and a great cruising boat for long weekends in the islands. The efficiency of the Zeus Pod drives will offer even more advantages for longer trips and easy docking when in port.”
Overall this yacht is intended to be unique amongst a fleet of options, he stressed, and beautiful — both at rest and underway.

Lather Stylists Sharpen Skills at International Beauty Show

Lather Hair Salon owner and senior stylist Jessica Williams.
May 13, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – Jessica Williams and Whitney Page of Lather Hair Salon in Raleigh traveled to New York City recently to attend The International Beauty Show New York, a leading trade show and educational opportunity for members of the professional beauty industry.
Among the 125 classes available in haircutting, styling, color, makeup and salon business available at this year’s IBS New York Show, the Lather stylists first attended a seminar taught by Martin Parsons, a Canadian hair stylist renowned for his quick and elegant up-dos. Wedding makeup and hair is one of the Raleigh hair salon’s specialties, so the stylists were eager to see Parsons’ latest innovations, Williams said.
Whitney Page then attended a coloring and foiling techniques class presented by Adrienne Rogers of Cutler Salon and Hush Salon in New York, while Williams, who owns the Raleigh hair salon, attended a business class entitled “How To Increase Your Cash Flow,” conducted by Gary Ahlquist, a well-known salon business consultant.
“It was very informative,” Williams said. “Gary Ahlquist consults with small businesses all over the country. He gave great hints and tips on how to make your retail area work better, how to promote more retail products so that your product is flying off the shelf, and how salon owners should compensate their staff.”
Later in the day, Williams and Page participated in an airbrush makeup application class presented by Danielle Fonseca for Temptu Pro, an international brand that creates innovative cosmetics. Airbrush makeup application is a special service available at Lather Hair Salon.
“I’m always the person applying airbrush makeup for others,” Williams noted, “so besides increasing my skills through the class, getting my own makeup applied was a great opportunity for me to experience exactly what my clients experience when they’re sitting in my chair.”

March 13, 2008 (RALEIGH, NC) – ArtCo Surf, a new Raleigh-based company that creates and produces one-of-a-kind and limited edition surfboards, skateboards and its own apparel line, has launched www.artcosurf.com, which will allow customers to order directly from the company on-line.
ArtCo Surf’s products are created by a collaboration of three artists — Clark Hipolito, Brian Wynn and Tony Ramsi. – who have become well-known over the past two years for their “Against The Grain” collections of hand-painted, wood-grain surfboards. Those boards fetch prices in the thousands. As commissions have rolled in, along with a demand for slightly less expensive yet still one-of-a-kind boards, the partners have expanded their work to include original photography on signed, limited-edition boards. That idea grew to include skateboards as well an apparel line, which they are currently developing for production.
The new website features all the surfboards currently available (prices range from $1500 to $5000), ArtCo Surf T-shirts, in-depth information on the company and the boards, and a list of up-coming events where the boards will be on display. The website also offers visitors a chance to win a free ArtCo Surf board.
Clark Hipolito and ArtCo Surf’s newest products will be featured in upcoming editions of Line Up Magazine, Waterfront Homes & Design, Eastern Surf News, North Carolina Signature magazine, and North Carolina Boating Lifestyle.
