November 2, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – A Cut-a-Thon to raise money for Habitat for Humanity of Wake County will be held Thursday, November 12, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. at Lather Hair Salon off Glenwood Avenue North/Highway 70, Raleigh.
The money Lather raises will be used to help sponsor Habitat/Wake’s 2009 Holiday Home Tour & Party later in November.
“We want to show our support for Habitat/Wake’s on-going mission to

build good, affordable homes for low-income families who simply can’t qualify for traditional mortgages,” said Lather’s owner and senior stylist Jessica Williams. “The annual Homes Tour & Party are also fundraisers for Habitat/Wake. So by helping to sponsor that wonderful event – during which tour goers get to see a collection of homes Habitat has built – we can extend Lather’s donation beyond the money we raise during the cut-a-thon.”
From 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on November 12, Lather will donate the usual payment for every hair cut done that day to Habitat/Wake. Lather’s hair cut prices are: women’s cuts $38-$50; men’s $22-$31; and children 10 and under $18-$26. (Stylists’ tips are not included.)
Complimentary beverages will be served during the Habitat/Wake Cut-a-Thon, and a donation box will be on hand so customers can donate even more if they want.
“The box will also be there for anyone who may not need a hair cut that day but still wants to donate,” Williams added.
Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity of Wake County has joined with individuals and local organizations to build simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with families living at modest income levels. Habitat for Humanity helps people build and buy their own homes by creating opportunity, not dependency.
“So we’re hoping lots of folks will decide to make their next hair cut count for more than just style and beauty,” Williams said. “By getting your hair cut at Lather that day, you’ll be supporting one of the best causes out there. We encourage everyone to remember the Habitat mission: ‘Building homes, building hope, building community.’ “

October 28, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) — This holiday season is coming up fast and invitations for holiday parties are going out. For this fun and busy time of the year, having an easy way of throwing your hair into a quick “party-do” is essential. Here are some suggestions from the stylists at Lather Hair Salon in Raleigh for creating dramatic, elegant looks in a flash.
The Messy Bun:
As soon you get home from work, school, or all those errands, turn on your curling iron. Wrap strands of your hair into a figure “8” around the barrel of the iron. Repeat the process all around your head, especially in the front. Leave pieces down, framing your face, and put the rest up into a low, loose bun. (For a different look, the bun can be pulled to the side of your head.) Pull strands from the bun and pin outwards to create that chic, “messy” look. 
The Side Braid:
This style can be worn with a pony, bun, or with your hair down. Start with the front parts of your hair (either parted down the middle or on the side) and braid small sections (French or conventional), then pull them backwards and pin. You can also use this technique by simply twisting your hair, sans curling iron, and pin the strands back. This style looks great with either one or both sides braided. For a bohemian look, make the braids loose and messy. For a sleeker look, make them tighter.
The Side Pony:
This look is great with loose curls or straight hair. Wrap the ends of your hair around your curling to create long, loose waves. Don’t worry about the top of your head as this will be pinned back. Leaving your bangs alone, tease the top of your hair for volume. Smooth backwards and pull hair into a low, side ponytail. Pull back any loose strands, or leave a few to frame your face.
Loose Locks:
For women who generally leave their hair straight, coming into a party with flowing curls is definitely a dramatic difference! To do this, take sections of your hair, spraying each with Sebastian Re-Shaper first, and wrap them around a curling iron. After you’ve curled your whole head, run your fingers through the curls to break them up a little. To create a soft wave, brush through with a hairbrush.
Accessorize:
Headbands and pins are very popular this year. And they’re a super easy way to dress up a ponytail or change your daytime look. There are different styles of bands: the “hippie” sort that tie around your forehead, the hard headbands that sit right behind your ears, and of course scarves, pins, and bows. You can change your look by your choice of clip.
All of these styles are quick and easy and will give you a fresh look for holiday parties. Be sure to condition your hair with a styling agent, such as Whipped Crème by Sebastian, and spray with a shine serum to give you a sleek, beautiful sparkle. If you are coming home from a long day at work or school, add some KMS Hair Makeover spray — a dry shampoo — to soak up excess oil. Finish these styles off with a hairspray by Sebastian (loose hold to strong, depending on your style). Throw on some lip shine and go!

Canadian Magazine Selects Lather Hair Salon for Photo Shoot

October 16, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – When Canada-based Rouge Magazine researched salons in the Triangle area to find a location for a photography shoot, beauty editor Gabrielle Johnson and art director Daniel Mackinnon chose Lather Hair Salon in North Raleigh.
Last week, Lather’s stylists gave model Carolina Cely of Greensboro a full make-over while Rouge photographer Bruce DeBoer captured the process and results for an upcoming feature in the magazine.
Why Lather? “Gabrielle said she looked for a Wella salon that was media savvy, and that she really liked the look and feel of our salon,” said owner and senior stylist Jessica Williams. “It was very exciting. They came all the way from Canada!”
A Wella salon is a hair salon that uses and sells Wella hair care products. Lather uses Wella color systems exclusively.
For the photo shoot, stylist Lauren Lawson created the model’s Wella hair color. Williams did the styling and cutting. For makeup, Williams brought in local makeup artist Pamela Hung.
The salon’s “media savvy” derives from Williams’ education in communications and public relations, a degree she received from North Carolina State University in addition to her cosmetology education and license. In February 2008, she also contracted with blueplate pr, a boutique public relations agency in downtown Raleigh.
Among the media attention Lather has attracted since teaming with blueplate is a recent feature in Salon Today magazine’s online edition. The article focused on Lather’s “Latherwear” logo tee shirts (this past summer) and new “hoodies” for fall and winter as a marketing effort to extend the salon’s brand out into the community.
As for the “look and feel” of the salon, Lather is a relatively small shop whose décor features a rich and trendy blue and brown color scheme punctuated by black styling and shampoo stations, including large, black-framed mirrors at each station. Stylish furnishings and a stained concrete floor complete the look.
“We were absolutely delighted that Rouge chose Lather for the makeover shoot,” said Wiliams, who will celebrate her first year of doing business this month. “It was a great early anniversary present!”

Komen For The Cure Foundation and to help kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Lather Hair Salon in Raleigh will participate in “PinkFest 2009,” an afternoon of celebration, information, and personal pampering to be held Sunday, October 4, from 1-4 p.m. at the new Renaissance Raleigh Hotel in North Hills.
Owner Jessica Williams and other Lather stylists will be on hand to demonstrate hair and makeup techniques to the 300-plus attendees expected. 
“We’re really looking forward to sharing our expertise with everyone who comes to PinkFest, but especially the breast cancer survivors who will be there,” Williams said. “If anyone deserves a day of pampering, it’s those courageous ladies. Proceeds from PinkFest 2009 will be used for education, treatment and screening programs in the Triangle community.

September 15, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – Lather Hair Salon, a full-service salon in North Raleigh, has signed on to help sponsor the Habitat for Humanity of Wake County’s 2009 Homes Tour.
For several years, Habitat Wake has begun the holiday season the Sunday before Thanksgiving with its Home Tour of a particular neighborhood in which several Habitat houses have been built. The event includes a holiday party at the ReStore on Raleigh Boulevard where Habitat Wake sells usable building materials at a deep discount to raise money for building Habitat homes.
To defray the costs of the tour and party, sponsors underwrite the event and local restaurants donate food and beverages. All funds raised through tickets sales to the event go directly into building homes and supporting families, according to Missy Hatley, assistant director of development at Habitat Wake.
“I can’t think of another community outreach that deserves our support more than Habitat for Humanity,” said Lather Hair Salon’s owner and senior stylist Jessica Williams. “Building healthy, affordable homes for families who so desperately need them is such a remarkable service to any community, including our own here in Wake County. We’re honored to help sponsor the Home Tour — to celebrate and show off what Habitat Wake volunteers have accomplished this year.” 
Lather Hair Salon makes it a regular practice to get involved in charitable efforts. Most recently, the salon turned its back-to-school sale into a collection drive for Matter of Trust, the umbrella organization that sponsors the Oil Spill Hair Mats program. Throughout the special, Lather stylists collected hair clippings that will be turned into mats that help clean up oil spills.

Hair Color and Highlights:

Raleigh Hair Salon Turns Back-to-School Promo Into An Environmental Cause

August 4, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – Lather Hair Salon in North Raleigh has found a way to combine a back-to-school special promotion with a good cause. From Monday, August 10, through Saturday, August 29 , the salon will offer a 20 percent discount on all hair cuts in recognition of the annual imperative to get back to the books – in style. And for the duration of the back-to-school special, all of the hair that hits the salon floor will be swept into special boxes for donation to Matter of Trust, Inc., the organization that sponsors the Hair For Oil Spills Program that makes oil-absorbent mats out of human hair to help soak up oil spills around the globe.
“Nearly every salon offers some type of back-to-school special. But we wanted ours to be more than just a business promotion,” said Jessica Williams, owner and senior stylist at Lather Hair Salon. “We wanted to do something that would make a difference, and Matter of Trust gives us the perfect opportunity. The more hair we cut during our promotion, the more we can donate, so we’re hoping lots of environmentally concerned folks in need of a hair cut will come to Lather to help us fill those boxes.”
Williams also appreciates the fact that a fellow salon owner started Matter of Trust’s Hair For Oil Spills Program. Phil McCrory, a hair stylist from Alabama, came up with the idea while he was watching CNN coverage of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. He noticed how the affected otters’ fur seemed to soak up the oil, and he wondered how much human hair would absorb. After some experimenting with the hair swept up from his salon’s floor, he created the first “hairmat.”
In 2000 McCrory launched the Hair For Oil Spills Program, which became a part of Matter of Trust, Inc., which links ideas and actions for using natural and manmade surplus materials for eco-educational programs and causes. Matter of Trust pays to send the collected hair to non-woven needle-punch factories that make hairmats for emergency oil spills.
“The hair that lands on Lather’s floor – at a 20 percent savings to our customers — could help save the life of an injured animal,” Williams said. “How can you not feel great about that?”

June 29, 2009 (RALEIGH, NC) – Three stylists from Lather Hair Salon, a full-service hair and make up salon in North Raleigh, recently honed their hair coloring skills at a special “Swatch and Learn” workshop featuring “Koleson Perfect” tonal colors by Wella Color Movement.
Lather stylists Lauren Lawson and Alissa Phillips accompanied the salon’s owner and senior stylist, Jessica Williams, to the workshop, which was held at the Color Salon and Day Spa in Morrisville, NC.

The “Swatch and Learn” workshop gave all participants the chance to increase their knowledge of the philosophy and education behind Wella’s Color Movement hair color line in general and the Koleson Perfect system in particular. It increased their expertise in color consultation and in creating their own color palettes for their hair swatch books.
The workshop also addressed how to interpret color trends by working with Wella shades and other color lines.

think about formulating color in a whole new way,” said Williams, who realizes the salon’s clients will only benefit from her staff’s ongoing education.
Lather Hair Salon opened in October of 2008 as “an upscale salon without the attitude,” according to Williams.

“In a tight economy, hair care might not fall at the top of anyone’s must-have list,” Williams said. “So we wanted to make it a little easier to continue to take care of your hair all summer.”
